The ICFP program at The Citizen Lab, co-founded by the Open Technology Fund, welcomes proposals from candidates for research projects related to the following thematic areas:

Freedom of Expression Online: Research on how state actors and private companies censor and disrupt information at the network and application layers, and how these controls impact freedom of expression and other rights.
Targeted Digital Threats against Civil Society: Research on digital espionage tactics used against global civil society groups, and the impact and mitigation strategies available to them.
Mobile App Privacy and Security: Research on security and privacy issues in mobile applications with high user bases in understudied communities, and outreach to companies to present concerns and help users make informed decisions.
Legal, Policy, and Technical Research: Proposals that fall within the broad areas of evaluating laws, policies, and norms related to Internet censorship and surveillance and technical research on software tools, analysis of systems, data analytics and visualization to document technologies and technical practices affecting openness, privacy, and security are also welcomed.
